A manual RMU does not always need to be replaced when remote operation is required. In many projects, a suitable RMU motorization retrofit can convert an existing manual switching mechanism into an electrically operated system while keeping the main switchgear in service.

However, motorizing an RMU is not simply a matter of installing a motor. The existing operating mechanism, shaft interface, switching function, control voltage, auxiliary contacts, interlocking system, installation space, and remote-control requirements must all be checked before selecting a replacement mechanism.

For distribution automation projects, the motorized mechanism can also be connected to an RTU or DTU and integrated with SCADA for remote open/close commands and position feedback.

Can a Manual RMU Be Motorized?

Yes, many manual RMUs can be motorized, provided that the existing switchgear and operating mechanism are mechanically and electrically suitable for the retrofit.

A typical retrofit replaces or adapts the original manual operating mechanism with a motorized operating mechanism for RMU. The motor then drives the existing switching mechanism through the required transmission system.

Before ordering a mechanism, check:

  • RMU manufacturer and model
  • Rated voltage and current
  • Switching function, such as LBS or other functional units
  • Existing operating mechanism
  • Shaft size, position, and operating direction
  • Mounting dimensions
  • Operating travel or stroke
  • Motor control voltage
  • Auxiliary contacts and position indication
  • Mechanical and electrical interlocks
  • Available installation space
  • Local/manual and remote operating requirements

The important point is that the same RMU voltage rating does not mean the operating mechanism is interchangeable.

For example, a 24 kV RMU does not necessarily require a 24 V motor. The MV rating of the switchgear and the control voltage of the motorized mechanism are different specifications.

What Is an RMU Motorization Retrofit?

An RMU motorization retrofit upgrades an existing manual RMU so that switching can be performed electrically.

The basic system can be understood as: Manual RMU → Motorized Operating Mechanism → Control Circuit → RTU/DTU → SCADA

Depending on the project, the retrofit may provide:

  • Remote open/close operation
  • Local electrical operation
  • Switch position feedback
  • Distribution automation
  • Reduced site visits
  • Integration with RTU or DTU
  • SCADA-based monitoring and control

The retrofit approach is useful when the existing RMU is mechanically and electrically serviceable but the distribution network requires additional automation functions. For selected RMU configurations, Xizi Energy provides motorized operating mechanisms for RMU retrofit with options for local electrical operation, manual override and remote-control integration.

Industry documentation also confirms that manual-to-motorized upgrades are used in MV switchgear applications. Schneider Electric describes replacing a manual mechanism with a motor-driven mechanism for suitable MV switchgear, while ABB documentation states that motor kits and accessories can be fitted to existing RMU mechanisms in applicable configurations.

Does RMU Motorization Require Replacing the Existing RMU?

Not necessarily.

If the existing RMU is in good condition and the operating mechanism can accept a compatible motorized solution, a retrofit may allow the main switchgear enclosure and primary circuit to remain in service.

For maintenance projects involving other aging components, see our guide to RMU spare parts replacement and maintenance.

The decision should be based on the actual condition and configuration of the existing RMU rather than assuming that retrofit is always the simpler solution.

What Components Are Needed for RMU Motorization?

A complete motorized RMU system may include:

ComponentMain Function
Motorized operating mechanismDrives the switching operation
Drive motor and transmissionProvides mechanical movement
Auxiliary contactsProvides switch position/status signals
Control relayControls electrical operation
Local/Remote selectorSelects local or remote control
Control power supplySupplies the mechanism and control circuit

SCADAProvides remote monitoring and control
Interlocking circuitPrevents unsafe operating sequences

A motorized operating mechanism alone does not make an RMU SCADA-ready.

For remote operation, the control circuit, feedback signals, interlocking, communication equipment, and automation logic must also be correctly configured.

How to Retrofit a Manual RMU for Remote Control

1. Identify the Existing RMU

Start with the equipment nameplate and existing mechanism. Record the manufacturer, model, rated voltage, switching function, mechanism type, and control requirements.

Photos of the RMU nameplate, front panel, operating mechanism, shaft, and wiring are extremely useful during compatibility assessment.

2. Check the Mechanical Interface

The motorized mechanism must physically match the existing RMU.

Check:

  • Mounting hole pattern
  • Shaft diameter and position
  • Transmission arrangement
  • Operating direction
  • Stroke or travel
  • Mounting depth
  • Available internal space

Selecting a mechanism based only on the RMU model or voltage can result in mechanical mismatch.

3. Confirm the Motor Control Voltage

Do not confuse the RMU’s medium-voltage rating with the motor control voltage.

Depending on the equipment and project design, control supplies may include 24 V DC, 48 V DC, 110 V DC, or 220 V AC/DC. The actual voltage must be confirmed from the existing control system and selected mechanism.

4. Check Auxiliary Contacts and Position Feedback

Remote control requires reliable status feedback.

Typical signals include:

  • Switch open
  • Switch closed
  • Local/remote status
  • Mechanism status
  • Control power available
  • Fault or abnormal condition

The auxiliary-contact arrangement must be compatible with the control system.

5. Verify Interlocking and Manual Operation

Mechanical and electrical interlocks must remain effective after motorization.

A retrofit should also consider whether manual emergency operation is required. The motorized mechanism should not create an unsafe operating condition or interfere with the intended manual operating procedure.

6. Connect the RMU to RTU/DTU and SCADA

A typical remote-control sequence is: SCADA command → RTU/DTU → control relay → motorized mechanism → RMU

The feedback path works in the opposite direction: RMU position → auxiliary contacts → RTU/DTU → SCADA

This allows operators to confirm whether the switching operation has actually reached the required position.

How to Check RMU Motorized Mechanism Compatibility

Before purchasing an RMU motorized operating mechanism, prepare the following information:

InformationWhy It Matters
RMU nameplateIdentifies equipment configuration
Existing mechanism photoConfirms mechanism type
Shaft/interface photoChecks mechanical connection
Mounting dimensionsConfirms physical installation
Switching functionDetermines mechanism configuration
Control voltageDetermines motor/control circuit
Auxiliary contactsConfirms position feedback
Interlocking arrangementEnsures safe operation
RTU/SCADA requirementsDetermines control and communication interfaces

For retrofit projects, sending these details to the mechanism supplier before ordering can significantly reduce compatibility problems.

How to Integrate a Motorized RMU with SCADA

After mechanical installation, the control system should be tested step by step.

A typical commissioning sequence includes:

  1. Verify mechanical installation.
  2. Check manual operation.
  3. Check motor control voltage.
  4. Test electrical open/close commands.
  5. Verify open/closed position feedback.
  6. Test local/remote selector.
  7. Verify interlocking.
  8. Test RTU/DTU communication.
  9. Confirm SCADA status indication.
  10. Perform final remote-control testing.

The exact commissioning procedure depends on the RMU design and project control architecture.Motorized operating mechanism fitted inside RMU cabinet after manual RMU motorization retrofit

Common Problems During Manual RMU Motorization

Choosing a Mechanism by Voltage Only

Two RMUs with the same voltage rating can have completely different operating mechanisms.

Assuming the Motor Is Universal

Motorized mechanisms are not universally interchangeable. Shaft geometry, mounting position, travel, operating direction, and transmission design must be checked.

Ignoring Control Voltage

A mismatch between the existing control supply and the motorized mechanism can prevent normal operation or damage control components.

Forgetting Position Feedback

Remote control without reliable open/close feedback can create uncertainty for the control-room operator.

Removing Existing Interlocks

Interlocks are part of the switchgear’s operating safety system and should not be bypassed simply to make motorization easier.

FAQ: Manual RMU Motorization

Can a manual RMU be motorized?

Yes. Many manual RMUs can be motorized when the operating mechanism, mechanical interface, control circuit, and switching function are compatible with the retrofit solution.

How do you motorize a manual RMU?

The typical process is to identify the existing RMU, verify the mechanism interface, select a compatible motorized operating mechanism, install the control circuit, test interlocking and feedback, and then integrate the system with RTU/DTU or SCADA when required.

Does RMU motorization require replacing the whole switchgear?

No. For suitable existing equipment, a mechanism retrofit may allow the main RMU to remain in service. The actual feasibility depends on equipment condition and compatibility.

Can a motorized RMU be connected to SCADA?

Yes. A suitable motorized RMU can be integrated with SCADA through an RTU or DTU when the control, feedback, communication, and interlocking systems are properly configured.

Is an RMU motorized operating mechanism universal?

No. Compatibility must be checked against the specific RMU configuration, operating mechanism, shaft interface, switching function, control voltage, and installation dimensions.

Can the RMU still be operated manually after motorization?

This depends on the mechanism design. Where manual override is required, it should be confirmed before selecting the retrofit mechanism.

What is the typical cost difference between RMU motorization retrofit and full RMU replacement?

Cost depends on RMU model and site condition. In most cases, a qualified motorization retrofit costs less than full RMU replacement, provided the existing switchgear remains serviceable.
